Energy Challenges of the 21st Century
The rising global demand for clean energy production, coupled with strained infrastructure and fluctuating supply/demand cycles is taking a toll on the ability of electrical grids to support the energy needs of modern society. The ability to store energy in an efficient and cost-effective manner can alleviate the variability associated with wind and solar generation, reduce the requirement for expensive fossil-fuel standby plants and potentially defer costly infrastructure upgrades.
Our Unique Approach
Isocurrent's main goal is to test, optimise and commercialise a unique power storage technology that has the potential of becoming a viable standard for power smoothing.
Our system employs a novel approach that allows for a nearly constant temperature throughout the energy storage/retrieval process. Specifically, the gas compression/expansion cycle is optimized by means of a substantial heat exchange area in addition to a prolonged heat transfer time. This results in a round-trip efficiency in excess of 70% without the need to incorporate fossil fuels or complicated heat exchange technology. Another key factor in our design is that the system takes advantage of easily obtainable and performance proven off-the-shelf components, which significantly reduces the cost of the system and has negated the need for extensive research and fabrication of custom components. In fact, the first prototype developed (a 1KW / 4KWH unit) was built with parts sourced from local retail stores at a cost consistent with a major household appliance purchase. With full modular scalability in both generation and storage capacity, Isocurrent has the potential to fill the energy storage needs of a wide range of clients, from commercial to grid-scale projects.
